Alanna Matty - “The Process”
Toronto-based singer-songwriter Alanna Matty returns to us with “The Process,” a solemn glimpse into the collapse of a friendship.
Upon pressing the play button, listeners will be enchanted at Matty’s astounding insight into the realm of indie folk. The raw and intimate strums of melancholic acoustic guitar are first to fill the ears, and it is as though the song is being performed right in front of you. The subtle tones from an orchestral synth gradually enter the sonic field, offering a seemingly endless sense of depth and rounding out the instrumental.
With the pensive vibe firmly locked into position, Matty begins her heartfelt vocal performance, delivering subject matter saturated with emotional exhaustion, the pressures of regret, and, ultimately, bittersweet acceptance. Songs about heart break are a dime a dozen, but it is extremely rare that we hear the dull ache of outgrowing a friendship. With “The Process,” we now have a soundtrack to the task of removing platonic toxicity from our lives.
As the song progresses, the arrangement is joined by the reverberating notes of a piano, some deeper tones from a bass, and a remarkable yet fleeting vocal harmony that demands multiple listens. But the real star here is Matty’s voice, which completely nails our niche when it comes to a folky, Julien Baker/ Lindsey Jordan kind of delivery.
