ktwheels - “Does She Know”
Chicago-based indie rocker ktwheels has just released the warm and crunchy sounds of “Does She Know,” a cathartic jaunt through the unraveling turmoil of heartbreak.
“Does She Know” begins quite peacefully, with the muted notes of clean guitar, including a subtle bend at the end of the bar. The reverb here is rather palpable, leaving sonic space for ktwheels to deliver her sullen subject matter. And when her pleading voice arrives with “Whisper that you want me,” it is abundantly clear that we are in for an emotional ride.
The first portion of the track is calm and restrained, allowing for the tension to build beneath the barebones arrangement. This changes a bit with the arrival of the rhythm section on the second verse, sending “Does She Know” on a slow and steady march into its crescendo. Elegant moments of harmony vocals and ephemeral licks of lead guitar have been deployed in all the right areas, just enough to keep our interest piqued.
Midpoint brings a slowly descending chord progression that builds in intensity until ultimately exploding into a chaotic wall of overdrive and double-time rhythmic energy. In the final throws of “Does She Know,” listeners are flooded with the overwhelming desire to break things, as ktwheels delivers the final, heavy line of devastation: “I don’t know how to love anymore.”
