A Different Thread – “Goodbye Muddy Waters”

Transatlantic duo Alicia Best and Robert Jackson, aka A Different Thread, return to the blog with the understated and contemplative Americana track “Goodbye Muddy Waters.”

This new tune is constructed from the unvarnished, timeless layers of acoustic guitar, crying glissandos of slide guitar, glowing organ, and harmonica. You are wrapped up in a warm, unpretentious mood and gently cradled by the push and pull of the unhurried drums and bass. It is the rootsy melancholy, a soundtrack to American landscapes, that only the greats, such as Neil Young or The Band, can fully capture.

The duo’s vocals imbue a genuine personal touch with a mature sense of restraint. Every lyric is delivered perfectly, creating a mood that invites a singalong, but this is never pushed: no grand statements, no showy harmonies, only the quiet embrace of two timbres.

Jackson describes “Goodbye Muddy Waters” as “the sound of love torn across oceans but still burning.” That is probably the best encapsulation of the sentimental mood and direct nature of this great Americana-flavored slice of indie folk.

Heartfelt, romantic, and reflective, the slow-burning “Goodbye Muddy Waters” is taken from the album Over Again, which is out today. A Different Thread are extensively touring the USA and UK this year, so make sure you pick up a ticket and check them out live here.
