Orlando Hotopf – “Blue Jeans”

London-born, Stockholm-based singer-songwriter Orlando Hotopf has just released the new indie folk single “Blue Jeans.”

Blue Jeans” sounds much bigger than the small cabin where it was born. It begins with a quiet, gentle finger-plucked guitar, while an additional melodic layer dances over the top. Together, these sounds create the fantastic, natural loop on which the rest of the track is supported.

From there, our ears are met by Hotopf’s voice, treated with what appears to be a mixture of reverb and delay, adding some old-timey weight to the production. His performance is supported by a steady vocal harmony, barely audible at first, but once it hits you, it sticks with you for the duration.

For an indie folk tune, the drums have a rather heavy hand, and although they are wrapped in a creamy 1960s compression, the momentum from the rhythm section is quite epic. Because of this urgency provided by the beat, the vocal hook lands especially hard when the drums drop out of the arrangement.

Blue Jeans” bursts at the seams with dynamic variation and, after a brief break at its midpoint, the song slides into a moody middle eight that will surely keep you coming back for more. The music mirrors the track’s emotionally overwhelming lyrical content, making it a perfect addition to those playlists reserved for late-night drives into the void.
