Jonny Tex - “Mustard Seeds”
Jonny Tex from Massachusetts, USA, debuts on the blog with the catchy and elegantly frayed indie rock track “Mustard Seeds.”
“Mustard Seeds” is the melodic yet gorgeously gritty sound you needed in your life. Walking in the tradition of garage rock revival, indie rock, and post-punk, it ebbs and flows with no gimmicks or tricks. It simply relies on a torrent of thick, syrupy, gnarly electric guitars, forceful, imploding drums, and a deep, attacking bass to create the sound that dreams are made of.
As we pass the halfway mark, the controlled chaos of the composition gains alarm-like keys that solo through sustained notes and oscillating sweeps. This heightens the angsty, alienated unease that permeates the dark corners of what is otherwise a buoyant and melodic tune.
Vocally, we are treated to a confident, agile display of showmanship and emotion. The voice is used as a lean, raspy instrument filled with introspection. It glues the song together, offering contrasts and catharsis. Lyrically, “Mustard Seeds” is about observing people moving through life totally oblivious to everything burning around them.
Tight, focused, fluid… this is an exceptional listening experience coiled with intensity. “Mustard Seeds” is taken from Jonny Tex’s forthcoming EP, Mark of Cain, scheduled for release May 28th via @happntwice.
