William Torp - “same old me”

Denmark’s William Torp has just released the gorgeous indie folk number, “same old me.” This song packs a punch with its beautiful textures, melancholy, and authenticity.

The song is built around a warm, acoustic fingerpicking pattern that sets a quick, weaving tempo. Instruments are added thoughtfully, allowing the dynamics to gently build. Drums enhance the song’s movement, giving a sense of swagger whilst a lush, low bass pads the track with warm tones.

Within “same old me,” dynamics flourish over the chorus sections, giving a satisfying sense of ebb and flow to the production. The song’s groove is enhanced by tambourine, subtle electric guitar provides some width, and texture is added by what I believe is violin. The bright, gentle tones that sound like violin give a wonderful sense of warmth, but also introspection.

As the song moves to the next verse, the layers gradually start to peel back, allowing a sweet sense of melancholy to permeate the arrangement. The textures that are left continue to bring warmth, but also build anticipation for the next chorus. Torp‘s vocal is inviting, but also tinged wonderfully with meditative emotion, which guides us thoughtfully through the verses, but also lifts us over the chorus sections as the dynamics grow. Backing vocals enhance this sense of lift with airy and light harmonies.

The artist describes the lyrical meaning of the song: “‘same old me’ is about feeling stuck in life. Constantly waiting for something great to happen but nothing ever does. I wrote the song to get myself out of that miserable state of waiting. Nothing happens if you don't try to make it happen.”

William Torp‘s “same old me” is a wonderful indie folk song, full of lush, weaving tones, warm textures, and a solid vocal performance. This track will leave you mesmerised and wanting more.
