Tory Silver - “Microwave”
Pittsburgh-based artist Tory Silver arrives on our channel with “Microwave,” a fresh cut from their forthcoming album, In Through the Front with Lasers.
“Microwave” kicks things off with a wide and gritty chord progression via electric guitar, ascending up the major scale and building a hefty dose of anticipation and tension. After a couple of bars, the rest of the band arrives, featuring a steady, yet hard-hitting rhythm section and another layer of rich, six-string goodness.
Over the verses, the guitar textures are peeled back to make room for Tory Sliver’s vocal performance, which bears some resemblance to the likes of Katy Kirby and Adrianne Lenker. It’s quite easy to relate to the subject matter, painting a raw portrait of working-class exhaustion and anxiety, getting lost in the endless circle of the daily grind, and the hopelessness of mental burnout.
The pre-chorus breaks down into a half-time, tom-driven rhythm that reveals a serious level of introspection before the refrain hits listeners with an angsty: “Scrambled eggs… On my plate… Getting cold… Microwave.” Simple, tongue-in-cheek, and layered in gang vocals, it’s not at all difficult to imagine the crowd screaming along at any live performance.
Complete with delicious vocal harmonies, heavy guitars, and catchy choruses, this track is bound to quickly become one of your new faves. “Microwave” comes ahead of the new LP, In Through the Front with Lasers, due for release on May 29th via Michi Tapes.
