TOMI - “If You Tried”

If You Tried” is the latest single by USA-based artist TOMI. The song takes us on a journey through relationships, their complexity, and the issues that can occur with communication.

If You Tried” is built around a warm acoustic guitar. A deep bass gives a strong foundation and a nice, slow drum beat effectively kicks the song along. The song is really stripped-back, with only a splashing of other elements, like synthesizer, to fill the spaces. The production gradually develops into a fully-fledged indie rock anthem, growing in its emotional intensity as the song progresses. The creative use of dynamics is also one of the track’s most notable qualities.

The real highlight of the song, though, is the impressive vocal delivery. There is genuine passion, but also vulnerability to the performance. Dynamically, the vocal varies from sections of quiet reflection over the verses, to top-of-your lungs passion over the chorus sections. The backing vocals nicely add to this effect, supporting and providing width.

Overall, “If You Tried” is definitely a song that has all the hallmarks of an indie anthem. It also gets better the more you play it… getting under your skin, like any decent song should. This track is taken from the upcoming album, Late Bloomer, due out in August.
