The Sways - “I Have Been the Moon”
The Sways from the USA have just released the evocative “I Have Been the Moon.”
“I Have Been the Moon” is a quietly anthemic track reminiscent of older acts like The Eagles, but also more contemporary ones like CVC. It’s a slow-burning, woozy, swaying acoustic gem that has its feet in indie folk but also west coast soft rock. It doesn’t rely on flashy production tricks or unusual instruments to grab your attention.
Instead, it favours good old-fashioned songwriting, mood and melodies. While many new bands spend more time focusing on what might please an elusive algorithm and struggle to get this balance right. The Sways, a new band themselves, have this in bucketloads. Crucially, they also know how to write a chorus!
Supporting the relaxed shuffle of the acoustic guitar is a gorgeous, vintage toned bass, the tender patter of drums and a slight hint of organ and electric guitar. Every element is allowed to breathe openly. It is a mood, a moment, a feeling.
What truly elevates the track are the well-arranged vocal and harmonies. The lead vocal is unique, tender but importantly not over polished to perfection. There is a real endearing character in the delivery that permeates every aspect of the composition.
Supported by closeknit, emotionally intuitive harmonies, the whole performance is full of colour. The little refrains of melodic syllables, whistling and humming that are also deployed only adds to that sublime, dreamy lullaby like mood. Quite simply this track feels timeless.
If “I Have Been the Moon” is the calibre of material that The Sways have up their sleeves, they are definitely an act that you should keep an eye on. Connect with The Sways: Spotify | Bandcamp | Instagram
