The Paper Kites - “The Sweet Sound of You”

The Paper Kites have likely already made it onto a few of your personal playlists, but this indie folk outfit from Australia is bound to win some new fans with “The Sweet Sound of You.” This is the first we’re hearing from them since their 2021 album, Roses, and we are truly excited for you to get this new one into your ears.

There is absolutely no denying the raw talent exuding from the acoustic guitar and Christina Lacy’s piano as they wonderfully duet at the intro of this remarkable beast. Brushed drums shortly join with the bass and the course of this heartfelt gem is set, softly and slowly moving forward, moments before Sam Bentley’s vocals sweep in. His impressive crooning informs the listener about the “changing of the seasons, the passing of time, and the memories that linger in between.” Most notable here are the fantastic harmonies on the second “sweet sound” portion of each refrain, which is bound to find its way into your heart and carve out a little spot to live forever.

In the months since we started the blog, we’ve grown very fond of pedal steel, so when the work of Matt Dixon becomes audible at about a minute and forty-five seconds deep, we knew we had arrived in indie folk heaven. There is then an unexpected and tasteful highlight on the harmonica before it ultimately departs, leaving plenty of room to let Dixon do his thing with the steel– simply one of the most ethereal and dreamy instruments in existence. The song circles back for one more verse-chorus combo before its glowing conclusion. “The Sweet Sound of You” contains every single element that we’ve come to love about the genre and once you press play, it is bound to transport you to beautiful place that you may or may not feel like you deserve.
