The Helltones - “Nothing Compares to You”

From Oakland, California, The Helltones return to our blog with the gorgeously stripped-back and soulful “Nothing Compares to You.” The song is full of heart and emotion, offering warm retro tones that conjure the classic records of the 1960s.

Nothing Compares to You” starts incredibly stripped-back with a warm but purposeful bass line that begins to flesh out the song’s melody. Staccato guitar heralds the introduction of more layers. The guitar churns out classic, slow rock ’n’ roll licks whilst the drums provide a sense of motion and direction. The musical layers remain wonderfully raw over the verses, allowing melody and vintage textures to subtly surround the vocal.

The dynamics grow satisfyingly over the chorus sections. Organ is introduced here, which adds a lush, almost gospel brightness to permeate the track. Guitar arpeggiates melodically over these sections, only stopping to use staccato rhythms to punctuate the emotional feeling of the vocal performance.

The song’s guitar solo is a real highlight of the track, again capturing the spirit of 1960s rock ’n’ roll. Great little note runs are used, which remind me of “She’s a Woman“ by The Beatles, and string bends ooze with passion. The organ shines brightly in these sections offering a great contrast to the edgier guitar tones.

The vocal performance is full of emotion and soul. It is wonderfully enhanced by the vintage backing layers that radiate behind the performance. This gives a real authenticity and depth to the track. Borrowing great tones from classic rock n roll, blues, soul and a touch of gospel, The Helltones’ “Nothing Compares to You” is an emotional, nostalgic, and musically accomplished song. Don’t miss the opportunity to get this one in your ears.
