The Flints - “Supernatural Feelings”

Indie psych duo The Flints, from Manchester, United Kingdom, have just released the atmospheric and intoxicating downtempo anthem “Supernatural Feelings.”

Although there is a psych pop lens across “Supernatural Feelings,” it sits more comfortably in the dream pop or the ambient indie genres. Lush, ethereal, spacious, yet its elegantly minimal in its production approach. Much in the same way as Air, Lemon Jellyor the Acid Casuals give off that sun-soaked vibe that you just want to listen to in headphones on a slow, relaxed morning.

Supernatural Feelings” is definitely not in a hurry but it is a subtle, funky voyage into an absolute dream of luxurious texture. You do find your head bopping after a few plays of this slow burner as you fall into the weightless drum and bass groove. Dressing the velvety rhythm are glowing, smooth synths and intoxicating guitar arpeggios that unfurl with a hazy, cinematic grace. With a psych shimmer to the mix, it is hard to imagine anyone not having a good time with this record.

Cementing the mood are the hushed, whisper like vocals that seamlessly and dreamily drift across the music. The performance is a texture in itself, which you can either allow to wash over you exploring it like a sonic environment, or passively be engrossed in as if eavesdropping on a half-remembered dream.

On the track, The Flints add: “Supernatural Feelings came from a period where everything felt heightened. Long-distance calls in the middle of the night, dreams that felt more real than reality, and that strange, electric sense that someone’s on your mind even when they’re miles away. We started writing the track between Manchester and Toronto while working closely with KOZ (Kendrick Lamar, Dua Lipa), pulling together lyrics and melodies that tried to make sense of that emotional blur. Back in Manchester, we finished the song in our home studio, layering in textures late at night until it finally felt like the fever-dream it was meant to be. It’s a song about uncertainty and connection, and the quiet, persistent question of whether what you’re feeling is love, or just the idea of it.”

In a nutshell, this is widescreen, chic retro-futurism anthem that is both familiarly nostalgic and otherworldly. “Supernatural Feelings” is taken from the forthcoming EP “21st Century Love” slated for release 15th August, via Nettwerk. Connect with The Flints: Instagram | Spotify | Youtube
