Teghan Devon - “Amnesia”

Maryland-based singer-songwriter Teghan Devon debuts on our blog with the melancholic sounds of “Amnesia,” a song that explores the trauma of being forgotten by someone you love.

Subject matter aside, the song is very aurally appealing, first entering your ears with the strums of an acoustic guitar. The overall production is extremely raw, which is entirely suiting, as commercial appeal can oftentimes strangle the life out of a heartfelt tune. But we are very pleased to inform you that “Amnesia” is emotionally intact, as you will experience upon pressing play.

Devon’s vocal is the reason the song will work its way beneath your skin, as she has a voice that is warmly reminiscent of Phoebe Bridgers and Lizzy McAlpine, which always seems to win us over. And for the first half of “Amnesia,” it is just the guitar, the lyrics, and the listener, which makes for one hell of a profound listening experience.

The real prize here is the melody that Devon has fashioned for the chorus, which elaborately raises until she breaks the ceiling with her falsetto. If, for some odd reason, the song did not initially draw you in, then prepare to fully realize why it is often called the hook. The lyrics and the manner in which they are delivered will sink themselves into your flesh, likely resulting in an ear worm that you will be humming for the rest of your life.

If that were not enough, ear candy has been provided by some reverberating lead guitar and lo-fi percussion, which eventually culminate in a full-band arrangement. If you find yourself in the trenches of missing someone, “Amnesia” is going to push you over the ledge, becoming the soundtrack to your despair. And if you’re lucky enough to still be with the one you love, we suggest listening anyway– you might need it later.
