Sunnan - “Blue”

Swedish indie outfit Sunnan debut on the blog with the enthralling neo-psychedelic track “Blue.”

Blue” is a widescreen banger of a track where the tone shifts effortlessly into areas you would never expect. Moments of euphoria collapse into inward-looking, soulful reflection. It opens with an unassailable vocal that doesn’t just introduce the track, it proclaims it like a bluesy war cry: “This is an anthem.” There is a strong colouring, emotional directness and soul of the late 1960s or early 1970s about the delivery.

As the drums and bass enter, the mood becomes steady, hypnotic, allowing the track to gain a sure footing and resonate. “Blue,” however, is hard to pin down. At points, the track slips into something more lounge-leaning trip-hop with echoes of Zero 7 crossed with the shadowy Portishead. Then, from the post-ambient elegance, the lead guitar vividly bites into a solo.

The vocal matches the shifts in mood, nimbly slotting into introspective confession, drawing you inward in what is a skilful game of tension and release. “Blue” feels sublimely familiar, yet it carries a spirit that resists being pinned down. Sunnan’s new single “Blue” is emotionally compelling, coolly expansive, and absolutely worth your attention.

About their new release, Sunnan adds: “Blue is a quiet rebellion, a loud lament. An internalisation of the juxtaposition blue feels, and blue skies. Reach your happy place by allowing your sadness. Don't grow numb in these bluesy times.”

Blue” comes ahead of the forthcoming LP, Spaghetti Soul, due out October 9th. Connect with Sunnan here: SPOTIFY | INSTAGRAM | YOUTUBE
