Stefan J. Selbert - “Rosebuds”
Los Alamos-based singer-songwriter Stefan J. Selbert has just released the gentle bounce of “Rosebuds,” a new indie folk morsel of California goodness.
We are running out of ways to tell you that Stefan J. Selbert is someone you need in your folksy arsenal of road trippin’ tunes. In the three years that we’ve known him, he never disappoints. What is interesting, however, is the way his songwriting has evolved. For example, 2024’s “Lend a Hand” boasted a lone acoustic guitar and vocal, which makes sense considering we imagine Selbert writing most of his tunes around the campfire after a day of rustlin’ cattle. But lately his sound has expanded to include a full band, and we are entirely here for it.
“Rosebuds” begins with all band members present and accounted for, with a deep bass line and acoustic guitar carried by a barebones yet confident rhythm. And while it is extremely easy to believe that the song is being performed right in front of you, it is Selbert’s vocal performance that breathes a contemporary magic into the cowpoke vibe of the production. His voice has been meticulously doubled, imbuing the track with that modern indie folk charm that initially drew us to the genre. But if we had to choose, it’s the subtle vocal harmonies and additional guitar textures on the hook that earn this track a spot on our site.
