SORRYNOTSORRY - “Foggy Like a Bladerunner”
Brooklyn-based indie psych duo SORRYNOTSORRY wrap us up in a cinematic, widescreen haze with the neo-psychedelic track, “Foggy Like a Bladerunner.“
Foggy Like a Bladerunner” is a textural delight to listen to bringing to mind the immersive, expressive guitars that made early Ververecordings so mesmerising. If you couple that vibe with the Latin sun-soaked mirage pop of BALTHVS and the sinisterly smooth rhythms of Warpaint you are getting close to the shimmering, hazy heat “Foggy Like a Bladerunner” conjures in your mind.
The dusty percussive groove and thick rubbery bass that hold the composition in place are perfect to listen to as you hit the asphalt on a desert highway in a car that desires only to be driven fast. Head bopping and confident, I cannot emphasize how satisfying the syncopated, rhythmic drive is to listen to. Throughout, guitars, from acoustic to electric, dance, tumble and blend with an elegance that is rarely heard in modern psych music. From the glassy acoustic motifs to the slow motion, drift of the electric that feels permanently spellbound in a bloom of delay. The music unfolds suspended in time, like a mirage.
Although the music is sublimely spaced out, the gentle, restrained vocals on “Foggy Like a Bladerunner” contrast satisfyingly. This helps to imbue a subtle off kilter effect which brings weight to the song’s lyrics and meaning which navigate feelings of alienation and persistence.
Guitarist Andrés Cottin elaborates on this: “The day we wrote this; the sky was orange and apocalyptic from the Canadian wildfires. It felt like we had reached maximum world degradation, but instead of absorbing that darkness, we channelled our gratitude into the music. The name just kind of appeared. We kept saying all day, ‘It’s foggy like Bladerunner outside.’ I love that the name doesn’t come from a lyric, it’s more like a feeling we couldn’t ignore.”
Hypnotic, sultry and eternally swaying, “Foggy Like a Bladerunner” is taken from SORRYNOTSORRY’s forthcoming debut album, The Other Side. Connect with SORRYNOTSORRY: Instagram | Spotify | Bandcamp | TikTok
