Somebody's Child - “We Could Start a War”

Somebody's Child, from Dublin, has released a new song called “We Could Start a War” and it is a belter. The ambitious indie-pop track pays proper homage to what an indie anthem should be– one that properly gets the whole crowd shouting at the tops of their lungs.

“We Could Start a War” begins with a dark and soulful vocal, which shows decent range and depth. It is accompanied by clean, reverberated guitar notes. The intro lasts about 45 seconds, which, to me, shows confidence in songwriting, and that time is taken to develop a mood. There is no rush to get to the chorus. This segment does a fantastic job of conveying a genuine sense of emotion.

Somebody's Child sings “Before we get any older, you know we could start a war,” then the song brilliantly intensifies into something more ferocious. I can only compare the guitar sound to an angrier and more sped-up version of Jonny Buckland. Throbbing guitar notes pulse out the rhythm to pounding drums. The chorus is truly driven home in the final section, before dying back into hazy guitar notes doused in reverb.

This single exudes a lot of confidence and is a brilliant example of strong songwriting.
