Selett - “Wheels Within Wheels”

From a basement apartment in New York City, singer-songwriter Selett makes her way onto our radar with “Wheels Within Wheels,” a soft, waltzy number designed for your deepest bouts of introspection.

The track opens with a sparse arrangement, led by some lo-fi piano keys, gently pressed as they beckon the vocal performance of Selett. Her voice comes in like a soft breeze, somewhat reminiscent of both Weyes Blood and Angel Olsen.

After the first refrain, the production expands, inviting the glorious sounds of a retro-tinged electric guitar across the top of a vintage-imbued rhythm section. All of these ingredients make for a timeless sound, conjuring the crooning days of the speakeasy, yet keeping its feet firmly planted in modernity.

Delightful moments of distorted synth crack through the soundscape as Selett utilizes an ethereal upper register. The entire back half of the track is void of any lyrics and, instead, presents an emotional display of ambient vocals. In its two minute and thirty-five second runtime, “Wheels Within Wheels” will put its hooks directly into your soul, drawing you back for multiple listens.

Upon hearing “Wheels Within Wheels,” do not be surprised if you find yourself investigating Selett’s previous releases. It is there that you will find the fantastic sounds of “Marionette,” her November offering to the world of music. Prepare to be dazzled by a wonderfully double-tracked vocal over a soft, straightforward rhythm.

The beat gains momentum after the first chorus, but does not steal the spotlight from the other vibey cast members, including more of that retro-effected guitar and seductive piano. The entire arrangement has been firmly glued together by some thick bass and you should not be surprised to find your feet tapping as you secure a place for “Marionette” in your favorite playlist.
