Scott Klein - “Paper Cigarette”
Austin, Texas-based musician Scott Klein has just released the smolderingly smooth indie rock track, “Paper Cigarette.”
“Paper Cigarette” is an alt pop strut that harks back to that golden era of music, the 1960s and 1970s when 7” vinyl and Friday nights out were king. With a shuffling Northern Soul-tinged groove that is woozy and hypnotic, you soon feel yourself thinking of bodies swaying late at night in a club illuminated by a Mirrorball.
Despite the seductive beat, tremolo-soaked guitar lines and sections of velvety reflection, you never feel that far away something that is doused in something dangerous. Maybe it is the teetering piano lines or the heavy anchoring bass but this track is more than Jarvis Cocker wandering through Twin Peaks. “Paper Cigarette” feels like the channelling of later Scott Walker, or even maybe a pinch of The Velvet Underground.
Vocally, Scott Klein oozes a polished Bobby Gillespie atmospheric. Each word is delivered with both a crooning cocked eyebrow but also a hollow stare… and don’t we love him for it. There is the vibe of both a confident lothario but also something a bit grittier and detached and this is exactly what is needed to animate the lyrics that explore the slow burn of desire stripped of intimacy.
Funky and very catchy, “Paper Cigarette” is a track that will get under your skin. It is a wonderfully old-fashioned pop single, something we can never have enough of! Connect with Scott Klein: Spotify | Soundcloud | YouTube | Instagram | TikTok | Facebook
