Say Anise - “One”

This time of year, it’s important to practice self-care, which often includes the ability to fall in love with yourself. And to help you along this journey, London-based singer-songwriter Emily Barnett, aka Say Anise, has released “One,” a tune about doing just that.

One” opens with the gentle sounds of a finger-plucked acoustic guitar before Barnett’s vocal softly glides in on a melodious breeze. A subdued synth pads the background of the stripped-back arrangement, providing an introspective ambience– a feature we have come to expect from the work of Say Anise.

The lyrics divulge a setting that should appeal to all introverts, lending a delicate soundtrack best suited for staying in on a Friday night. Though the production in “One” is quite sparse, the amount of self-empowerment it beholds cannot be contained– simply memorizing the refrain could very likely become a daily affirmation.

The faint sounds of piano keys emerge, allowing the song to maintain its intimacy while also revealing a bit of ear candy. By midpoint, “One” gives us some fantastic, swelling layers of backing vocals, stretching out across the soundscape as though glorious beacons of light.

One” is another divine example of Say Anise’s craft. Her voice remains unscathed by modern production tactics as she effortlessly guides listeners down a path of self-discovery and positivity. We are always more than happy to share her music, as it tends to be the torch we can carry through the darker parts of existence.
