SAER – “The Last Time”

UK-based SAER arrives on the blog with “The Last Time,” an indie folk journey through the quiet grief of unrealized love.

The Last Time” opens with acoustic guitar, delicately finger-plucked in all of its melancholic glory. Angelic falsettos offer a glimmer of hope to your heart, but this song will ultimately break you, particularly if you’ve ever had to mourn not only the end of a relationship, but also the future that was promised to you. All in all, it’s a breakup song, but it also explores emotional hesitation, missed opportunities, and the painful belief that friendship might somehow soften the loss.

Subject matter aside, the vocal performance is where “The Last Time” completely wins us over. The delivery recalls Jeff Buckley, Nick Drake, and The Beatles, all cited by the artist as inspirations, but we also hear strong shades of Villagers, particularly the live, acoustic rendition of “Nothing Arrived.” This comparison is most noticeable in the lingering vibrato at the ends of phrases, which offers a beautifully human element that takes a miserable experience and turns it into a work of art.

Little by little, across its four-minute runtime, “The Last Time” expands to include a gentle rhythm section, additional vocal textures, and some wandering notes from the piano. Ambient swells of strings drift through the background and if you’re not careful, you might find yourself getting lost amid its wondrous crescendo.
