Riley Pearce - “You Won’t Be There”
Perth, Australia-based singer-songwriter Riley Pearce returns to the blog with “You Won’t Be There,” the latest single from his forthcoming LP, The Weight of Dreaming, due to be released on October 31 via Nettwerk.
For those of you who vibe with the raw and emotionally-charged work of artists such as Gregory Alan Isakov and Neil Halstead, you really need to spend some time with “You Won’t Be There.” Although the track is a bit more upbeat than our usual, melancholic flavor of indie folk, there is truly no denying the authentic performance and production occurring here, at times evoking the days when entire bands would rally around a single microphone.
This superbly intimate soundscape does not begin and end with the acoustically-driven arrangement, as Pearce has been blessed with a voice that gently reels in the listener. His matter-of-fact delivery brings a remarkable sense of vulnerability to “a quietly devastating reflection on the tension between life on the road and the loved ones left at home.” Because of this, it should come as no surprise that we tend to feature every tune that he sends our way.
About this new cut, Pearce adds: “I keep coming back to how being away from home feels now and all the moments missed. Time differences make geographical distances feel larger. With two young girls back home, all I want is to end my day sharing stories,” Riley reflects. “The road gets lonely, and even though technology brings with it parts that make that less so, both my wife and I are having two different but equally hectic days that amplifies the lack of each other being there when we need them.”
