Pet Snake - “Coffee”

Pet Snake, aka Evelyn Halls of Clean Cut Kid, has just let us listen to her new single, “Coffee,” the third track from her upcoming EP, Bathwater. This one is a darker number, with edges sharp enough to surgically remove your soul, as Pet Snake draws deep into subject matter that is quite harrowing. While you’ve probably heard us go on and on about Julien Baker, we discovered Sharon Van Etten around the same time and Pet Snake is the first indie artist that we’ve found to be reminiscent of the latter.

Pet Snake’s vocals are delivered emotionally and with a panache that often only comes from first-hand experience in relationship turmoil. “Coffee” is tragic and raw and sounds exactly like the trauma that it describes, with glorious reverberated guitars that seem to echo the distress exuding from the lyrics. Make no mistake, this is indie folk, but it is the kind of indie folk that comes dangerously close to becoming indie rock… and we are completely here for it.

Pet Snake describes the track: “I wrote this song about someone who manipulated their way into my life and then left in the cruelest of ways. When I’d think about them after things ended, I didn’t wish them any harm, or hurt- I just really hoped they were on their own and their manipulative behaviour had failed to snare anyone else. I wanted them to be lonely more than anything else. It’s an anthem for anyone who has felt like they’ve been tricked into intimacy and left feeling small and disposable.”
