Otracami - “Please”
From Brooklyn, singer-songwriter Camila Ortiz, aka Otracami, returns to the blog with “Please,” the lead single from her forthcoming sophomore LP, Runoff.
“Please” gets underway with the pensive strums of an acoustic guitar, setting an urgent backdrop with tinges of melancholy. This vibe is reinforced with the arrival of Otracami’s dynamic vocal performance, which effortlessly drifts from mezzo soprano to falsetto– one of the reasons we have been listening to this tune on a seemingly endless loop.
The ghostly notes of a piano occasionally take shape in order to fill out the top end of the arrangement, with a rhythm section emerging as a means to provide momentum, as well as to echo the overall sense of urgency. These additional layers are added and removed at will in order to create an increasingly fluctuant and exciting listening experience.
Just before midpoint, the upward shift in production is immediately apparent, with the energy of the rhythm pushing “Please” forward and additional layers of vocals appearing to spread the sound to the far reaches of the sonic spectrum. The track remains at the peak of this heavenly crescendo until the recording’s abrupt end.
The full album, Runoff, is due for release on March 20, but “Please” is now available everywhere you get your music. Otracami describes the song as “a long, unsteady season of despair,” which just so happens to pair quite magnificently with our seasonal depression.
