Oscilla - “Tongue-Tied”

San Francisco-based Oscilla have just released the indie folk track, “Tongue-Tied.” The song feels like an early burst of summer air, with its dazzling melodies and exquisite layers.

Tongue-Tied” opens to hazy ambient layers that are reminiscent of Boards of Canada, instantly setting a meditative atmosphere. The song then bursts with a sense of colour, as saturated, descending piano lines tumble invitingly across the arrangement. The bright, rich sounds of fingerpicked acoustic guitars weave cheerfully throughout the song, creating an irresistible sense of movement. This groove is snugly held together by a steady drum beat, as the bass pulses soothing waves underneath.

There is a delightful current of nostalgia imparted on this track, thanks to the recording process. Partly recorded on a 1970s handheld cassette player, you can hear the unmistakable effervescent warmth of analogue oozing out of this recording. The subtle touches of back-masking effects heighten this atmosphere, also whilst lending an undercurrent of psychedelia.

The vocal is beautifully gentle and breathy. Rich in melody, the harmonising backing layers really set the performance alight, infusing a delightful sense of passion and emotion in the performance. The lyrics are charmingly evocative and colourful as they describe the feeling of being near someone you care for.

If this song floats your boat, make sure to pencil in Oscilla’s upcoming EP, Drink Up the Sun, releasing on May 25th.
