Orange County Death March - “Covers”

The first song we heard from Orange County Death March was a track called “Bike,” which we wrote about. And as we wrote about “Bike,” we found “Songs For Girls,” which we also wrote about. Then the weeks went by and we started to miss Orange County Death March. Sure, we had “Bike” and “Songs For Girls,” but it got to the point where we could not eat. We could not sleep. We spent most of our nights pacing, wondering if we would ever hear from them again. We hoped. We prayed. We dabbled in witchcraft and bought a Ouija board… put together a search party… watched The Hallmark Channel on a loop for weeks at a time. Things were starting to look pretty bleak at UpToHear, then, finally, we received an email containing “Covers.”

If you are unfamiliar with Orange County Death March, it is important for you to understand that their songs never hit the same. “Bike” is a bouncy and playful tune, while “Songs For Girls” contains more meaningful subject matter. “Covers,” on the other hand, is by far the most serious track that we’ve heard from these guys: “In an obvious way, we have all been played. At a pivotal time, our covers have all been blown to the enemy… For those hungry for a protest song that doesn't beat them over the head, this is the one.”

While “Covers” is definitely not as upbeat and “fun” as their previous offerings, its message is deeper and the songwriting is on point. It’s a slower number, with very little instrumentation– not uncommon for their music, but it is tastefully executed with ace production, slowly building as it moves along. We would call it a crescendo, but it’s more like a tidal wave of emotion, given the current state of the world. It’s safe to say that we are truly fans of these guys and we know that you will feel the same once you hit play.
