Orange County Death March

To be honest, when I saw that they were called Orange County Death March, I thought it was another punk submission or, at the very least, something along the marvelous lines of Eagles of Death Metal. I was not expecting an electro-rock love song to be filling my aural space. But I like surprises and “Bike” is a sweet, little anthem for people who might be otherwise unable to pick up a passenger in an automobile. Being that this outfit is from Los Angeles, the track does a great job at describing the perfect, summery setting, perhaps bringing the listener to reminisce about those care free, endless summer days of yore. And while the majority of the song is blissfully poppy, there is also a tasty little guitar solo before the breakdown.

One of the coolest things about starting this blog has been finding newfound appreciation for music that is generally outside of my wheelhouse. With that, I decided to dive a bit deeper into Orange County Death March. Their track, “Songs for Girls,” is a short step away from the poppiness of “Bike,” spending the majority of its duration with just a bass line, snaps, and a vocal melody, as well as fleeting moments of sweet, little harmonies. It also features a trumpet solo from Cole Kamen-Green of Mmeadows. I actually prefer this track to “Bike,” but that is not to say that one is better than the other. They are both great tunes and are two, very distinct moods. Have a listen to both and see if I’m right.
