NOVACUB - “Should We Be Over”
NOVACUB, music project of Louise Bartle, best known as the powerhouse drummer of UK indie act Bloc Party, has just released “Should We Be Over.”
“Should We Be Over” is a swaggering, hard hitting indie rock track built around a heavy, mountainous groove that brings to mind the slick “R U Mine?” by the Arctic Monkeys. The sound is bold and muscular, locked into a hypnotic strut that carries a hint of menace. Hitting in gritty, short blasts this song is not about the melody and more about a riff driven mantra.
Orbiting this mechanical rhythm are some awesome sounds that just make you want to play the track again and again. Frantic splashes of lead guitar from Bloc Party’s Russell Lissack dazzle, bubbling arpeggiating synths act as an almost dance-rock textural counterpoint whilst high pads inject space and lift.
The vocal cuts against the heavy nature of the music taking on a direct, conversational, rhythmic tone. In a way the music is the muscle and the voice is the brain. The performance is full of character. Wry, knowing and with a great sense of emotional bite it gives the composition a lush arty, post punk touch rather than allowing the song to become a fully blown indie rock banger.
Speaking about “Should We Be Over,” Bartle adds: “This relationship went on for too long and it began to feel toxic. I didn’t know how to end it because I felt deeply for them. We couldn’t communicate healthily, and I started to feel trapped. This song became my escape, where I could express my feelings of resentment and anger. I asked Russell to play the fast bit of the guitar solo because I couldn’t do it and he’s an exceptional guitar player who did it in like 5 seconds!”
“Should We Be Over” is the fourth track to be taken from NOVACUB’s debut album Just Not Me, slated for release October 6th. On the album, Bartle explores the highs and lows of different relationships whilst touching on themes of identity and self-discovery.
