Niamh Regan - “Belly”

Ireland-based singer-songwriter Niamh Regan has just released “Belly,” the second single from her forthcoming record, Come As You Are.

Belly” begins with a slow-churning rhythm section comprised of a barebones beat and some deep bass. The warm, ethereal tones from an organ swell softy over the top, leaving the overall vibe quite dark with a raw sense of authenticity, just the way we like it.

Regan’s vocal performance begins with the rest of the arrangement, imbuing the production with a satisfying, vintage hue. Her voice is emotive and breathy, encapsulating a host of aspects from a few of our favorite artists, such as Maple Glider and Julia Jacklin. Regan has the ability to draw you in completely, as though you’re the only one she trusts with her lyrics.

As “Belly” rolls forward, layers of shimmering, reverberated guitars emerge, adding a fulfilling width to the sonic space. Throughout the track’s duration, elements are added and removed in order to provide a wondrous sense of ebb and flow, such as at the beginning of the second verse and its glorious highlight on the bass.

Overall, “Belly” is one of those super chill, folksy numbers that will resonate with listeners, regardless of their emotional state. With this new record, Regan’s goal was to capture a rich, live band sound, which we feel she has more than perfectly accomplished with this new single. And though we will enjoy “Belly” to its fullest, we also eagerly await Come As You Are and its release in May.
