Mono Mochi – “Into The Dive”
From Lucerne, Switzerland, indie outfit Mono Mochi are back with the dreamy pop-rock sounds of “Into The Dive.”
Mono Mochi have the rare ability to make modern recordings that sound as though you’ve stumbled across your parents’ treasure trove of classic LPs. Much of this has to do with the fact that the band utilizes 1980s analogue outboard gear, but there is also a great deal of magic in the songwriting, with multiple vocal textures skating across a lush and warm arrangement. “Into The Dive” is a fine example of this handiwork.
What we have here is a psychedelically flavored tune that begins with a nostalgic lead guitar melody laid carefully across a subdued rhythm section. Listeners need only be patient for a couple measures before a vintage-flavored snare drops into place, igniting a reverb-soaked layer of backing vocals and bringing the song fully to life.
Beneath the arrangement, the lyrics reveal a quieter story of self-acceptance, with the narrator slowly rediscovering a voice that had long been buried beneath the noise. And while “Into The Dive” is bound to resonate with listeners on an immediate level, the introspective nature of its subject matter is what will ultimately result in multiple spins.
If you happen to be a fan of Tame Impala or Real Estate, “Into The Dive” carries some of that same aesthetic. From the rich compression on the bass and shimmering layers of guitar to the warbling keys that appear around the midpoint, the track drifts into your ears like a forgotten favorite rediscovered years later.
