Mono Mochi - “Cats”

Lucerne, Switzerland-based Mono Mochi return to the blog with “Cats,” a folky number that encourages us persevere through this chaotic, broken world.

Beneath the tender glow of a delightfully finger-plucked acoustic guitar, there lies a warbling, lo-fi electric synth that is reminiscent of a Suzuki Omnichord. The vibe bears just enough of a nostalgic sense of melancholy that we are immediately entranced, and although the arrangement is quite sparsely populated, “Cats” works itself beneath your flesh, burrowing a path to the center of your existence.

The vocal performance, however, is what has successfully and completely won us over. Carving itself into the instrumental, the multilayered delivery is saturated in a thick, palpable layer of reverb that is bound to resonate with fans of Mac DeMarco and The War on Drugs. Glimpses from the rhythm section appear and disappear, with a melodic bass line and occasional nods from some barebones percussion.

And for music lovers who long for the sounds of yesteryear, there is enough classic Pink Floyd and Smiley Smile-era Brian Wilson to satiate that thirst. In just over three and a half minutes, Mono Mochi take us by the hand and teach us to carry on, even when everything seems to be falling apart.

Cats” is now available everywhere you stream your tunes and you can connect with Mono Mochi here: Spotify | Instagram | Apple | YouTube | Bandcamp
