Michael Simon Armstrong - “Semantics”

Michael Simon Armstrong from the USA has just released the charmingly energetic indie rock track “Semantics.” This marks the fifth time that we have featured him on our blog, which, as far as we’re concerned, is quite impressive.

Semantics“ is built around a really great, weighty drum groove that relentlessly pushes the song forward. Textures are added and removed thoughtfully over the top, making the track a satisfying listening experience. Gritty, driving layers are provided by two electric guitars. These two elements gorgeously complement each other by either doubling down on the same driving chords or providing melodic ear candy as the arrangement progresses.

The song’s textures build satisfyingly to the main chorus sections that are padded dreamily by retro mellotron. This layer gives a spectacular, soaring feel before the layers peel back again to the pounding drums. The bass line in “Semantics“ is nothing short of addictively good. Added only once the song’s main groove is firmly established, it provides a warm, pulsing foundation. It is given its time to shine as layers are removed, allowing the melodic noodling to come to the foreground, helping to build anticipation for the chorus.

The unusual solos that grace this track may be the true highlight of “Semantics.” These provocative solos underline Armstrong’s inventiveness as the sounds bend and distort. The tones and playful textures remind me of the work of Blur, especially towards the end, when they are coupled with contrasting but rousing trumpets. Armstrong’s vocal serves as the ideal accompaniment to this impressive track. The lyrical delivery is gentle and warm and strikes a pleasing balance with the more energetic and experimental textures.

Michael Simon Armstrong’s “Semantics“ is an exquisite indie rock track that is brimmed full of gorgeous textures and confident experimentation.
