Lonely Choir - “Alexa”

If you are searching for a raw, honest, and emotional vocal performance, you need look no further than the music of Denver-based singer-songwriter Lonely Choir. When we saw that her track was named “Alexa,” we were, at first, a bit skeptical– Lonely Choir has seemingly garnered quite the reputation for tongue-in-cheek storytelling and, based solely on its title, we didn’t think that this track would do anything for us. However, our skepticism ended once we pressed play. Not only were we blown away by this woman’s immeasurable talent, but we will even go so far as to say that she is now one of our most cherished finds since the blog’s inception.

Alexa” is, of course, about the device that has intruded many homes since 2016, informing us about the weather, letting us know when our packages have arrived, stealing our spouses– wait… what? Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this song is all about how a husband left his wife for Alexa. And while that may seem like one of the most ridiculous, far-fetched scenarios that anyone could fathom, Lonely Choir sells it to us completely, and we gladly pay every penny. These vocals are freakin’ spectacular and the only comparisons that we can offer are the amazing and lovely work of Maple Glider and Big Thief, two of the greatest indies that, in our humble opinion, this world has ever known. And while, at face value, the subject matter here is light-hearted, the songwriting itself is serious as all hell in its performance and production, turning it into one of the most outstanding songs about heartbreak that you will ever hear.

We ended up loving this track so much that we decided to dig deeper into the Lonely Choir catalogue, only to find another prize of the indie folk genre, “Kind Song.” This one opens with a trusty finger-plucked acoustic guitar, then delivers the lyrics: “I hope you get hit by a bus, but I don’t want you to die… I just want you to feel alone at the hospital, when they ask who to call and you’ve got no one.” That’s all it took– we are now fans for life.

With Lonely Choir’s EP, sports, out today, you should take some time to explore one of your favorite new singer-songwriters:
