Lauren Calve - “Shift”

Lauren Calve recorded “Shift” in Nashville, which might be why it sounds as fantastic as it does. In fact, she recorded her entire record there, set to be released on the first of September, but if “Shift” is any indication as to what the other tracks will sound like, your ears are in for a delightful treat…

Shift” begins with a substantial and spacious drum beat, letting you know up front that this ride is going to be quite epic. Bass and guitar are next to join, reasonably sparse at first, but leaving more than enough room for Calve’s lovely vocal work. The vibe here is slightly reminiscent of Sheryl Crow, most notably on the ensuing vocal harmonies. And the track is full of introspective lyrics that move very naturally against the soothing and steady soundscape.

In the background, we can hear the hints of some lap steel, which has fast become one of our favorite elements in these singer-songwriter arrangements. But there are other moments of ear candy that populate the production, ensuring that your ears always find something new and exciting to quench your thirst for new music. A highlight for us, of course, is the slide guitar solo that occurs near the song’s conclusion. It is vibey and tastefully performed, wonderfully sharing the spotlight with the song’s star: Calve’s incredible voice.

With this new collection of music, Calve “invites the listener to come along on her journey of self-discovery and change, demonstrating a musical masterclass in the art of emotional storytelling.” Our only hope is that she throws us a few more singles as we all eagerly await the release of her record.
