Kolby Knickerbocker - “Mother”

Just in time for Mother’s Day, Kolby Knickerbocker is here with an anthem for your maternal figure: “Mother.” And though we are not generally big fans of anything too sentimental, once you hear this man’s voice, you’re going to be sending us a ‘thank you’ card.

You would be hard-pressed to find an audiophile who is not keen on the way Otis Redding delivered his lyrics to the world. Or, for that matter, we also have Ray LaMontagne and his emotional storytelling. What we are getting at is that if you are fans of Redding and LaMontagne, you are simply going to fall in love with Knickerbocker’s style, as he is certainly good enough to be in their class.

Though “Mother” was pitched to us as indie folk, it has all the elements required to grant it some major vintage vibes, with a glorious two-inch tape feel, suitable for all generations of music lovers. And what we found most interesting is that many music artists would not be able to pull off this subject matter without it sounding contrived, but, as we said, Knickerbocker has such a raw and honest presence that he could likely make anything sound authentic.

From the bass and drums to the keys, horns, and acoustic guitar, “Mother” is at the top of its class, but the star here is Knickerbocker’s voice and we cannot wait to see what he comes up with next.

About “Mother,” Knickerbocker adds: “This song is very special to me as I’ve witnessed my wife step into being a mother with extraordinary grace and began to see how seemingly undervalued and under appreciated motherhood is in this country. With this song, I wanted to let my wife, and all mothers know, that I see how motherhood takes all of you and while I will never understand how hard it is, I want to thank you for the work you’re doing.”
