Kindelan - “Cigarettes”
Yorkshire-based singer-songwriter Kindelan arrives on the blog with “Cigarettes,” a track that sifts through the scorched debris at the end of a relationship. The track begins with the delicate sounds of an acoustic guitar, joined shortly by the steady pace of a rhythm session. Amidst a masterfully produced instrumental, swells of choir-like vocal harmonies rise and fall over the song’s duration, completely engulfing the listener for three and a half minutes,
Channelling the vibes of Lianne La Haves and Madison Cunningham, as well as a dash of Fiona Apple, Kindelan delivers an emotionally-charged, jazz-imbued vocal performance that has left us absolutely floored. From the gritty and poignant lyricism, to the raw and boundless nature of her natural talent, we find ourselves drawn directly into the track, just like the habit that the song title implies.
About the track, Kindelan adds: “The lyric that started ‘Cigarettes’ was “Look at me like I walked out of your dream. I’m not wanted back at home ‘till midnight.” When this line fell out, I found it heartbreaking and confusing. I remember the song traveling round with me in my day to day life, nagging me to finish it. The lyrics and melody of the second half of the verse two were written while walking home under some train tracks in the centre of Leeds.”
