Marc Killian - ‘Fifty’

Fifty is the new album by Marc Killian. Like the shiny muscle car that adorns the cover, it’s a well-polished machine that’s as ready to cruise as it is to push you back into those leather seats and get your heart pumping. It’s a rock album with a classic feel, but there are elements of all sorts of different genres mixed in, like a modernized hot rod that’s been fitted with all the latest gear.

Downpour” opens the LP and sends the message instantly that this music has been assembled with quality components, fit together tightly with curves and lines that give you a “they don’t make ‘em like this anymore” feeling… But of course they do, you’re listening to the proof! Who are they? They are just one person! And considering the pro-level of playing, it’s impressive that Marc played every instrument himself. And his vocals are solid!

Per his email, he’s (justifiably) proud of the drumming, which was all recorded live and has zero replacement samples! Even most of the additional percussion instruments (and there are plenty) were tracked live, which is impressive in the age of sample-everything. The drums really are great, but so are the guitars & everything else! There are a few featured artists who lend a bit of extra vocal flavor to selected tunes & “Turkish Tea” was co-written with Travis Jones about his experience in combat while serving in Iraq.

Think It Over” starts with a classic ballad vibe, complete with an ear worm prechorus hook before dropping into a sweet rocking chorus built on an infectious rock rhythm that takes the vocal to the next level. It’s my favorite moment…well, that is until the guitar solo soars in an becomes my new favorite moment!

This ride is so smooth, you keep the pedal to the metal. Stylistic shifts in “Radio Love Song” keep my bird brain interested and eager for the next unexpected turn. “Realign” tackles the touchy subject of politics, but I get the sense that he’s looking for us to dial down the crazy. “She’s That Way” almost has a rock-country cross over vibe. “Dies With a Kiss” is an adept indictment of love gone wrong & “Miss "Never Would I Ever"” is a sonic treat that alludes to a “love gone wrong song” while hinting at some other symbolism that I’ll let you ponder.

By the time we’ve reached the last track, we’re treated with “Turkish Tea,” which is an awesome rocker that hits like prog while staying true to its rock sensibilities. This album, intelligent & inventive, kind of reminds me of a modern Toto or Queensryche, without sounding like either. It’s just that the musicianship & creativity bring those bands to mind.

In short, there are countless great moments throughout Fifty and it gets better every time I give it another listen. For lovers of smart rock, I think it’s more than worth a listen… This one gets added to the library!
