Kate Harquail - “Sweaters”

Sweaters,” by Kate Harquail, is a gorgeous tune that exudes delicate emotion. Supported by a big acoustic guitar that strums dynamically, pushing and pulling the volume into phrases that ebb and flow like waves, Kate opens up her heart and melodies catch those waves and ride them to the shore of our eager ears. Her voice is immaculate, powerfully fragile, and makes me feel like she’s on the edge of tears. All of this is just how the sound makes me feel. Upon closer inspection, it seems that the lyrics support this feeling, or perhaps it’s the feeling supporting the lyrics. She sings, “I’m packing my bags one sweater at a time. I’m a complicated mess. Calm and composed until it’s all I have left.” Slide guitar swells in and out, giving a bit of Americana flavor to the overall sound. It’s a nice pairing and it further opens up the senses, providing a hint of desolation and dreamy despair.
