Julia Logan – “Khala My Friend”
Sweden-based singer-songwriter Julia Logan has returned with “Khala My Friend.”
If you know anything about our blog, you’ll know it’s extremely rare for us to feature a cover, but Logan’s rendition of Amanaz’s 1975 track hits us right in the feels. In a word: nostalgia. But this raw, jam-session-style recording bleeds authenticity from the first gritty guitar lick down to the deliciously thick compression on the rhythm section.
What makes Logan’s version so compelling isn’t just its loyalty to the original recording, but the way she reshapes it into something more intimate. With a slightly slowed tempo that leans into a folk-rock setting, it’s the vocal performance that ultimately lifts “Khala My Friend” into something distinctly more contemporary.
The highlights of this dreamy slice of folk pop include the layers of backing vocals interwoven behind the refrain, as well as swelling beneath lines in the verses. And we would be remiss not to mention the bitchin’ little drum solo that arrives at the midpoint, just before the dynamic key change.
Logan adds that she “came across ‘Khala My Friend’ years ago and was immediately drawn to its mood—the fuzz guitar and the quiet tenderness in the lyrics. There’s a looseness to it that feels really intimate, and it really stayed with me. I recorded this version with my producer Daniel [Bengsten] and a group of musicians, and it came together in a very collaborative way. We never released it at the time, but it kept coming back to me, so it feels right to finally share it.”
Much in the way Logan was drawn to Amanaz’s original composition, this version feels primed to pull in a new generation of listeners all its own. With “Khala My Friend,” the past isn’t just revisited—it’s reactivated.
