jules - “past life”
Contemplating the lasting presence of love, Toronto-based singer-songwriter jules returns to the blog with the meditative indie folk track, “past life.”
“past life” is elegantly stripped back, with each element breathing openly and thoughtfully. Anchoring the tender arrangement is restrained fingerpicked acoustic guitar. Weaving with a soft cinematic warmth it acts as the emotional spine that helps hold the whole track together. Curling around this layer are ghostly, spectral wails of lap steel and ripples of piano.
Reverb is exquisitely harnessed throughout, wrapping “past life” in an ethereal halo of ambient texture. Glowing, introspective and sublimely immersive, yet we are never allowed to wallow in the feeling of reflecting on love for too long. The subtle heartbeat of drums is added in places slowly guiding us forward and moving us though these feelings and emotions.
At the heart of this weightless, atmospheric track are the understated, featherlight vocals of jules. Tender and intimate, the performance sounds as if it’s being carried on a gentle breeze– or perhaps as if jules is singing just for herself unaware that we may be listening. With the affectionate support of harmonies, the vocal is nothing short of spellbinding.
