Jen Island - “See You Soon”

From the outskirts of London, Jen Island debuts on our blog with the freshly-squeezed sounds of her single, “See You Soon.”

We make no attempt to hide our affinity for songs that explore the perils of mental health, so when we discovered that “See You Soon” is about navigating a relationship with someone who is depressed, we immediately said yes. Contrary to its subject matter, this tune enters your ears like a dream, offering a subtle nod to 1980s pop with its palm-muted guitar hook. And, to be quite honest, this is exactly what we look for in the indie pop that rolls through our submissions– a gentle and dreamlike, guitar-driven arrangement.

Holding the tune together are the organic elements of the rhythm section, including a tight, modest groove from the bass and drums. Some soft synth has been utilized as a pad, filling in the empty spaces of the production. All of this, of course, creates a wondrous path for Jen Island to begin her elegant vocal performance– a definite highlight here and the precise reason that we are going to listen to the rest of her brand new EP.

See You Soon” rides an enchantingly chill vibe that we find reminiscent of Soccer Mommy and Snail Mail, often coming dangerously close to the realm of indie rock. Ear candy is provided by way of exquisite vocal layering tactics, as well as some very melodic moments from both the bass and guitar. And even if you’ve somehow managed to traverse this planet without ever having known the quandaries of depression, we guarantee that this one will still deeply resonate within you.

See You Soon” comes from Jen Island’s newly released, self-titled EP, available everywhere you get your music.
