Hot Apple Band - “Not Today”

In anticipation of their upcoming debut album, Sydney-based indie duo Hot Apple Band return to the blog with their delicious brand of retro-imbued folk rock in the form of a new single, “Not Today.”

For those of you who fancy an elegantly lo-fi production, wait until you wrap your ears around the raw sounds of this acoustic guitar. The bouncy chords playfully weave the foundation of the track, providing a delivery system for the vocals, which are tastefully reminiscent of both Sparklehorse and The Beatles’ more eccentric recordings.

Make-shift percussive sounds emerge as an electric guitar handsomely noodles its way around the production. The deep, round notes of a bass appear, adding weight and depth as the lyrics provide a laundry list of reasons to stay home instead of facing another day. Ear candy comes by way of some delightful slide guitar and backing vocals that add the finishing touches on this vintage slice of retro-rock pie.

About the track, vocalist Jack Kinder adds: “I wrote and recorded this in about an hour while I was frustrated trying to write another song. I was trying to record something to snap out of the funk I was in and once I started, it finished itself. Lewis came over later and played all the slide parts and Charlie (Waldren) added some backing vocals which really makes the song.”

Join us in spinning “Not Today” as we await the rest of the LP, So Long, Noodle House, due for release on November 24.
