Hazlett - “Tell Me What You Dream About”

Not to sound like a bunch of fanboys, but Hazlett might be one of the first artists that we discovered through Instagram. His fanbase is quite loyal and with good reason– his songs are always very well written and performed with such emotion that he would be very difficult to overlook, especially by any savvy, indie-folk connoisseur. So imagine our delight when we received a submission from his team in support for his latest track, “Tell Me What You Dream About.”

“Tell Me What You Dream About” begins in exactly the way that you hope it will, with a finger-plucked acoustic guitar performance that many indie artists dream of not only being able to play, but are also left wondering which microphone was used to capture it. It is very raw and sounds as if it is being played in the same room of wherever you are– and, as many of us bedroom studio recorders know, this is never the easiest task. Even though Hazlett is a very gifted guitarist, the real treasure is his voice.

After the brief guitar intro, fans of Hazlett are reacquainted with the reason that they love his music in the first place: his tender vocal, as it sets the scene with: “Cosy face summer stole… But the pen on the paper was more than you bargained for…” And though we could sit here and use our magic-Hazlett-decoder-rings to decipher the tale that this song tells, it is important to note that this man could sing every word in complete gibberish and fans of raw, stripped-back music would still huddle around the warmth of his emotional campfire. And with that, we will not paraphrase any sort of subjective meaning behind its lyrics.

As the song continues, more instruments join in, starting with the addition of bass, then a full band production as soon as the hook hits us. It is at this point that the song shifts from traditional folk to that danceable, popular flavor that will have you adding “Tell Me What You Dream About” to multiple playlists and sharing it with your friends. For those of you who do not yet know Hazlett, welcome to one of your new favorite artists:
