Hana Eid - “Taller Than Me”

From Hana Eid’s new EP, I Exist Because You Say So, we have just been handed “Taller Than Me,” a gritty and vulnerable number that traverses the absolute agony of longing.

The song opens with a single distorted guitar, chugging out the tune’s underbelly in order for Eid to deliver her intimate vocal. Unlike many of her peers, Eid does not seem to utilize any sort of autotune and, instead, leaves her performance extremely raw, which is one of the reasons we were drawn to her music in the first place.

Taller Than Me” remains in this sparse state for the first third of its duration, predominantly relying upon the lyrics to establish a seemingly overwhelming sense of desire. The absence of other elements instills the track with the idea that these thoughts consume the narrator when the rest of the world is silent– of course, this is only speculation.

And as the hook arrives, additional instruments join the arrangement, resulting in a full-band expansion of epic proportions. Upon the arrival of the rhythm section, it’s quite easy to imagine the sheer force that the chorus would have on a sea of concertgoers, ebbing and flowing between verse and refrain.

We’d like to say that this tune is reminiscent of boygenius, but Eid has been doing so well that maybe boygenius is now reminiscent of Eid. Either way, fans of Phoebe Bridgers and Co are going to find a new favorite song when they press play on “Taller Than Me.”
