Hana Eid - “Between Your Teeth”

USA-based Hana Eid has just released the spectacularly gritty single, “Between Your Teeth,” a vulnerable and heartrending ‘ode to yearning.’

The song opens with some marvelous chords from a slightly-overdriven electric guitar, setting the mood for Eid to begin her emotive vocal delivery. She feeds us the lonely, solitary line straight from her Spotify bio: “I hate this party” and, because we are introverts, we are immediately hooked.

Fans of Phoebe Bridgers and Soccer Mommy will find the contents of “Between Your Teeth” quite congenial and it is this familiar feeling that initially sold us on the track. The first verse is sparse and lures us down the spirited path of Eid’s storytelling, but the one-minute mark brings us a full-band production, complete with a relentless rhythm.

At this point, we cannot help but draw some quick comparisons to the likes of Big Thief and while “Between Your Teeth” is by no means a carbon copy, we can easily picture Eid touring with any or all of the artists we’ve mentioned thus far. In the track’s five-minute duration, a definite highlight for us is the brief dynamic break before the epic, final chorus.

Eid delivers a breathy and delicate vocal that we hope to hear much more of when she drops the rest of her EP, I Exist Because You Say So, on February 24th. And if you happen to be as impatient as we are, you should definitely check out her previous releases, including “Pitbull,” a tune that delves a bit deeper into the vastness of indie rock. It beholds a driving beat that hits a bit harder than “Between Your Teeth,” but still manages to take listeners on a tour through the fields of feels, as there is absolutely no denying the authentic magic of Eid’s tell-it-like-it-is vocal style.

And then there is “Weird,” a song that rides the line between dream pop and indie rock, featuring a lo-fi and persistent beat and a chorus that spreads to the furthest corners of the existing soundscape. The track ebbs and flows with heavy helpings of dynamic fluctuation, adding and subtracting elements to take you on a rollercoaster ride through your emotions. Eid’s sound fills the modern niche to its brim, so get on the bus now or else you won’t be able to tell your friends that you found her music before they did.
