georgia, georgia - “slow down”

Verona, Italy-based indie pop artist Giorgia Piva, aka georgia, georgia, returns to the blog with “slow down,” an upbeat anthem for “living life at your own pace.”

Some warbling and distorted chords get this one going, with an energetic rhythm promptly falling into place as a means to ensure that all listeners subconsciously tap their feet. The vibe is quite uplifting, truly perfect as we ease into another summery weekend.

Piva’s voice emerges with the confidence that initially won us over with tracks like runner up” and “things you do.” Her vocal performance appears to be guided by natural talent, instead of the digital enhancements that plague a plethora of modern pop numbers.

As “slow down” progresses, additional layers of guitar are deployed, giving the track some bonus indie-rock clout. These are most notable in the later refrains, as well as the bridge, then momentarily stripped away for a brief, acoustic guitar-driven break before the song bursts to life for the big finish.

The highlight in “slow down” is, of course, the hook; as Piva reaches into her upper register, listeners have no choice but to cling onto her glorious vehemence. Elements are added and removed as a means to instill the arrangement with dynamic ebb and flow, resulting in a song that is, quite simply, far beyond memorable.
