georgia, georgia - “runner up”

Italy-based singer-songwriter Giorgia Piva, aka georgia, georgia, has just released the dreamy pop goodness of “runner up,” out today via Factory Flaws.

runner up” begins with a some synth-based undertones before promptly being joined by a moderate beat and shimmering guitar chords. Piva’s vocal soon emerges, soft and breathy as she conjures the mellifluous spirits of boygenius and Clairo, two of our favorites when it comes to the genre. Some subtle backing vocal layers are present, which add a profound, ethereal element to the track, making sure to fill the sonic space with delightful bits of ear candy.

The beat soon shifts to a rhythm that is bound to get your feet tapping, while brilliant, reverberating notes from the lead guitar soaring across the arrangement, ultimately adding to the otherworldly ambience. Moments of delicate vocal harmonies rise to the surface as the song enters the satisfying fullness of the hook. It is at this point that we knew we had to feature the track, as Piva reveals her upper register, wonderfully double-tracked to ensure total sonic satisfaction.

About “runner up,” Piva adds: Did you ever have to compete to receive someone’s love? To prove that you are worth it? To fight for someone who isn’t even sure they want you? I did, and I’m no longer willing to. I don’t race to be a runner up, I only play if I’m going to win. And if you’re unsure about me, if I’m not sure I’m gonna win, then I’ll quit, before the race even starts and they fire the starting pistol. I’m leaving before the sun comes up and you wake up. If love has terms and conditions, run.”

Ebbing and flowing through your emotions, “runner up” is guaranteed to be a song that resonates among many listeners, both in terms of subject matter and by way of its craft. This is georgia, georgia’s second single and we already cannot wait to hear what she’s got cooking for future releases.
