Gayaneh Lara - “scary”

As you should all know by now, we are huge fans of vocals that leave absolutely no trace of pitch correction. In fact, we like them raw and vulnerable as hell. So imagine our delight when we pressed play on Gayaneh Lara’s debut release, “scary.” Not only will a listener be greeted with a stripped-back and emotional vocal performance, but there is simply nowhere for any flaws to hide (if any flaws actually existed here), as the only accompaniment is a piano.

On top of that, the lyrics, themselves, reveal an even deeper layer of vulnerability, as Lara lists a plethora of her greatest fears– some topical, some existential– all very cleverly weaved into every line of the song and effectively delivered to your ears via her delicate voice. With a surprise swell near its conclusion, “scary” is an ironic title, as this track is very enchanting to hear and anyone with a fear of falling in love should spend the rest of the day spinning it. We’ve made it easy for you– just hit play:

About the track, Lara says: “Walking home, I flinched at a dark spot on a wall because I thought it was a spider. It wasn't. It made me want to write a song about the things that scare me. Accompanying myself on the piano, I listed every fear, big and small, being as honest as I could. It led me to a punchline, the scariest thing of all: love. I see this track as an ode to fear, a love song dedicated to all scary things.” This description is almost as perfect as the song itself. You’re really gonna love this one, folks. And we hope that “scary” is only the first of many releases that Lara gives to this world.
