Find the Others - “The Great Divide”

The Great Divide,” from Find the Others, is an incredibly strange number that takes several unexpected turns and I really love it. The song opens with what I can only describe as low saxophone pad-like tones, in a way, reminding me of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ “The Right Stuff – Remix by 3D.” The song then transitions smoothly to an electric piano that creates the groove. Tapping noises, which sound like cutlery, move across the panning field, filling the sparse arrangement. As the song progresses, additional percussion and backing vocals gradually develop a funky groove. The backing vocals are used in a way that is evocative of TV On The Radio. The vocal is wonderful and unusual and no other performance would suit this song. Occasionally, it drifts effortlessly into the falsetto range and it is quite the stellar performance. The song takes a little break near the end, with a spoken word sample. This serves as a fantastic dynamic break before the finale.

Find The Others say: “On the surface, the song is about a relationship breakdown. Dig a little deeper, and it's about the isolation and loneliness we all feel from time to time in the modern world, especially online.”
