Fedbo x Daphne Gale – “Licorice Mint”

From Germany, singer-songwriter Fedbo has teamed up with Brooklyn-based Daphne Gale to bring the short and sweet “Licorice Mint.”
From the mesmerizing nylon strings of the acoustic guitar to the Billie Marten-esque vocal performance, “Licorice Mint” weaves its raw, stripped-back existence into your soul. At the refrain, Fedbo’s voice emerges to harmonize with Gale as an additional layer of guitar arrives to provide mellifluous elevation.
By the midpoint, a lo-fi rhythm section finds its place in the arrangement, giving the song a little more momentum without disturbing its delicate balance. Each new layer arrives with purpose and with such grace that “Licorice Mint” never loses the sense that the duo are performing in your living room.
While the vast majority of contemporary folk releases lean into polished production, “Licorice Mint” serves as a reminder that too much gloss can wash away the aspects that made us fall in love with the genre in the first place.
